It is best not to wear your shoes every day, rather only every third day, so the leather can to dry in between. Otherwise the dye can stain your feet or the leather can stretch dramatically and the life span of your shoes is reduced significantly. Once in a while give your shoes a good polish. Do not overdo the shoe cream, as this can block the leather pores and decrease your feet´s ability to breathe. For the occasional care of all plain leathers we recommend, for example, "Collonil Waterstop Colours", a light shoe polish with lanoline. However, the edge of the sole and shaft of shoes in the Closed collection should be treated with suitable shoe polish on a weekly basis to prevent moisture from seeping in. Small scratches can often be treated with matching shoe polish, too.

If your shoes get wet, do not place them in direct sunlight or on a radiator but allow them to dry naturally and make sure that they keep their shape by using a suitable shoetree. The use of shoetrees is not recommended for very soft leather as they may stretch the leather. However, above all, never wear your shoes while still wet! Otherwise the leather could stretch and the shoes could lose their shape beyond repair.

The leather we use is a natural material that can be damaged if not treated correctly. However, marks and scratches do underline the quality of the material. The more the natural skin structure is visible, the less the leather has been industrially processed.

Vegetable-tanned leathers (wax, waw, dplx, dpw, ice) are extremely sensitive to humidity and heat. Rain and moisture - also from inside - can leave marks and result in colour changes. Vegetable-tanned leathers become darker with wear.

All chrome-tanned leathers are not suitable for people with chrome allergies. In case of a chrome allergy please take only those shoes made from purely vegetable-tanned leather into consideration.

Extreme heat such as that caused by direct sunlight, radiators or open fires may not only damage the leather surface substantially but also the shoe as such. Pull-up buffalo leather (pub) has been treated with oil and wax. Please take care with light-coloured clothing as the oil can leave stains.

To clean the nubuck leather, please use a suede brush or a special nubuck cleaning block. Before wearing your nubuck shoes the first time, apply a neutral waterproofing spray to make them a little more resilient. Some stains such as grass or oily liquids cannot be removed at all. Nubuck leather should never be treated with shoe polish.

Liquids like water or oil, and even dirt can leave irreversible stains on any leather.

All leathers are susceptible to leaking dyes, on both sides. Thus please do not wear light coloured socks with dark or coloured shoes and also take care with your clothing.

All leather with shiny surfaces such as batik or shiny buffalo (bug, glm), calf (lux), as well as goatskin (pek), patent (ven, lam) and crack (crk) leather or all leather with coated (wht) or metallic surfaces (waw, sft) are extremely sensitive to surface damages. Therefore, please keep in mind, especially with children´s shoes, that scratches or other damage to the surface cannot be repaired.

All leather can stretch. When buying your shoes please make sure that they fit correctly. Also it is always best to wear socks of the same thickness. If the shoes get wet, please allow them to dry naturally and, above all, never wear your shoes while still wet! Otherwise the leather could stretch dramatically and the shoes could lose their shape beyond repair.

The patent leather can break if put under strain. When buying these shoes please make sure that they fit correctly.

Unfortunately, in some of our Closed shoes the cork insole can rub against the insole causing them to make a squeaking noise. It is usually very easy to eliminate by taking out the cork insole and sprinkling a little talcum powder underneath it. You can use regular body or talcum powder. If you do not have any talcum powder at hand, we will be happy to send you a sachet.

The soles of most our shoes are made from rubber. Any surface with sharp edges or hot tarmac will damage these soles as well as those made from crepe. If the soles of your Closed or wooden shoes are worn down, please return them in time to have them resoled (prices on demand) as otherwise the shoes can be damaged beyond repair.

All soles can pick up small stones and other sharp objects as well as dirt. Dark soles may also leave marks on light coloured surfaces. Therefore please clean the soles of your shoes thoroughly and do not wear your shoes on delicate surfaces.

The soles on our shoes are soft and flexible and have been designed for use in urban surroundings only. They are not suitable for sharp-edged, uneven surfaces, like in the mountains or on stone beaches. Please also pay attention to sharp objects in your urban surroundings such as metal grids or staircases, though, as these can also damage the rubber. Slowing down your scooter or bicycle with your shoes or walking on hot tarmac will also do irreversible damage to the soles.

Dark soles may also leave marks on light coloured surfaces.

Please do not put pressure on the front of the soles and avoid activities such as kneeling as the seams may snap and parts of the sole could become detached.

Our soles are made from rubber or crepe and can be slippery. Please take extra care on wet, icy or badly soiled surfaces as well as on sandy ground and also be aware of any objects that could trip you up. Leaves, banana skins, garbage, oil stains, wet tiles or any other slippery surface can be especially dangerous. Please also keep in mind that crepe and rubber soles can become statically charged.

Our wooden soles are made from alder, beech and poplar timber. The colour and grain of each pair may vary due to the individual characteristics of each tree.

Wood is a natural material that can be damaged if not treated correctly. Wood is sensitive to moisture and can crack if dried too quickly. Please do not place your shoes in direct sunlight or on a radiator. Let them dry naturally instead.

The wood has not been varnished. This means the shoes are comfortable to wear, as they absorb sweat and massage your feet when walking. But it also means that the soles are less resistant to dirt. Light dirt may be removed with fine sandpaper. Unpleasant odours cannot be completely rules out.

Wood is shock-sensitive and may break. Take extra care with kerbs and on stairs and never drop your wooden shoes.

The uppers of our wooden shoes are made from leather and can stretch. If the uppers stretch, please return the shoes for repair. Otherwise the uppers may not offer enough support and accidents cannot be completely ruled out.

Due to the natural movement of the material, the nails on the uppers can loosen with time. In this case please return your shoes immediately for repair and be aware that there is a risk of injury from loose nails.

Wooden soles are hard and offer no shock absorption. Therefore wooden shoes are not recommended for people with hip, knee or joint trouble. In particular, the higher soles are fashion items, which are not beneficial to your health. Be aware that if you trip or stumble you could hurt yourself.

Bags

With time the leather we use for our bags looses its firmness. Moisture can have an accelerating effect on this process. By overloading the bags or repeatedly using them empty the bags may loose their shape. The surface of the leather is sensitive to scratches, abrasions, marks, moisture or heat. Also the leather of our bags can bleed. Therefore please take extra care with new bags and avoid any contact with light-coloured clothing.

General

Our shoes have a standard insole ("footbed"). Any modifications to these insoles or their replacement with other insoles can change the shoe and thereby have an impact on our liability. Only selected styles in the Closed collection that are lined can be recommended for orthopaedic insoles. All other Trippen shoes are not suitable for orthopaedic insoles.

Trippen shoes cannot replace the use of orthopaedic footwear that has been designed to meet individual needs. In case of medical conditions which affect the feet or musculoskeletal system, please seek advice from your medical practitioner before wearing Trippen shoes.

Trippen shoes are not climbing or walking boots and cannot be used in place of any other specialised footwear. They are soft and flexible and have been designed solely for use in urban surroundings.

Trippen shoes are not running shoes. Too much strain can reduce the life span of the shoes drastically.

Trippen shoes are not waterproof. Please avoid wet conditions, as otherwise moisture can get through the seams and into the shoes.

Trippen shoes are not safety footwear. They should not be worn on building sites or any other workplaces requiring special safety footwear.
